I am a big podcast listener in general, and I will admit to throwing on an episode of The Office Ladies to get myself down a long descent on a solo hike - but I wanted to compile a list of my favourite adventure-themed podcasts. There are so many out there to sift through, but these are the my go-to's. Some of them I have even cycled through more than once - they're just that good.

Out Alive by Backpacker

Out Alive by Backpacker shares true survival stories from the wilderness. I am obsessed. Hosted by the editors of Backpacker magazine, each episode dives into the harrowing experiences of outdoor enthusiasts who faced life-threatening situations and lived to tell the tale. The show blends gripping storytelling with expert insights on how to handle emergencies in the wild, offering listeners both inspiration and practical advice for staying safe during their adventures.

I recommend this podcast to everyone I know, and I have definitely listened to some episodes more than once (hint: the Disaster on Mt. Ranier episode... but prepare yourself for some tears). Seriously though, each episode is told by the individual who survived the ordeal, and some of the stories are wiiild. Not only do they tell amazing stories, but they give the listener valuable knowledge about how they can survive in a similar situation if it ever happened to them.

Devastatingly, Out Alive is no longer making any new episodes, but I can almost guarantee that you will start over again from the beginning after you finish the last episode.

Wild Ideas Worth Living

Wild Ideas Worth Living is a podcast by REI that celebrates adventurous and unconventional living. Hosted by Shelby Stanger, the show features interviews with trailblazers, adventurers, and change-makers who turned their wild ideas into reality. From athletes and entrepreneurs to environmentalists and artists, each guest shares stories of taking risks, overcoming challenges, and finding purpose in the pursuit of their dreams. The podcast is an inspiring listen for anyone seeking motivation to embrace their passions and live a more adventurous life.

This one is really motivating. If you have ever had a wild idea and wondered how you could ever possibly make that idea into a reality, you should listen to this podcast. The interviewees are inspiring and refreshing, and it makes you think outside the box a little bit. If you are looking for inspiration - throw this one on!

National Park After Dark

National Park After Dark is a podcast that delves into the darker, mysterious, and sometimes spooky side of national parks and other wild places. The show combines storytelling with history, exploring tales of true crime, ghost stories, and strange phenomena that have occurred in or near protected natural areas. With a mix of the eerie and the educational, the podcast offers a unique perspective on the beauty and intrigue of the great outdoors. It’s perfect for listeners who enjoy the intersection of nature and the macabre.

I have made the mistake of listening to this one on a solo hike... not always recommended. But, I am a big fan of this podcast and I have been listening for a couple of years now. The hosts always introduce the park or protected area that the story takes place in by chatting about the history of the area, the flora and fauna, etc. You get to learn about some beautiful places, and then you get to hear some spooky stories. As a scary movie fan and a fan of generally spooky things, I love this podcast. Hopefully you will too.

Against the Odds

Another survival story podcast... are you noticing a theme? Against the Odds is a podcast by Wondery that tells true stories of survival, resilience, and human determination in the face of extraordinary challenges. It is a bit different than Out Alive in the sense that each story is told in a series of episodes, so the stories are much longer and more detailed. Each series dives deep into a gripping account of individuals or groups confronting life-or-death situations, whether in remote wildernesses, during natural disasters, or amidst human-made crises.

With immersive storytelling and a focus on the perseverance of the human spirit, the podcast keeps listeners on the edge of their seats while shedding light on what it takes to survive the seemingly impossible. You can get pretty involved in this one. And some of the stories can get quite intense so strap in.

She Explores

She Explores is an empowering podcast that highlights the voices and stories of women who explore the outdoors. Hosted by Gale Straub, the show features interviews and personal narratives from a diverse range of women, including adventurers, environmentalists, artists, and outdoor industry leaders. Topics include the challenges and triumphs of outdoor life, environmental advocacy, creativity, and the personal growth that comes from connecting with nature. With its thoughtful and inclusive approach, She Explores inspires listeners to find their place in the outdoors, no matter their background or experience level.

This one is really important to me. Advocating for women in the outdoors has always been an important part of how I move through the landscape of the professional outdoor industry. Give this one a listen, and get inspired by some badass outdoor adventure-loving women.

The Dirtbag Diaries

The Dirtbag Diaries captures the spirit of outdoor adventure and the dirtbag lifestyle. Hosted by Fitz Cahall, the show features authentic, often personal stories from outdoor enthusiasts of all levels. From epic adventures and close calls to reflections on the simple joys of living life in nature, each episode celebrates the passion, community, and creativity that come with pursuing a life outdoors. With a mix of humor, heart, and inspiration, The Dirtbag Diaries resonates with anyone who loves wild places and the stories they inspire.

This one has been around for a while and has lots of episodes to choose from. It's inspiring to hear from people who are so passionate about nature and outdoor adventures.

There you have it! Hopefully this list serves as a little slice of inspiration to get you psyched on your next adventure.
